Please consider this before purchasing merbau timber:
‘Merbau’ timber which is readily available from local timber yards across Australia continues to be currently logged illegally deep in rain forests of the Philippines, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Australian and New Zealand suppliers profit from SE Asian rain forest destruction.
Australia has about one million hectares of softwood plantations established (mostly Radiata pine). We have only about 100,000 hectares of hardwoods in plantations so far - much of which is still immature. About 70 percent of the softwood timber we consume in Australia is domestically grown.
